- Workers' compensation insurance typically only covers injuries or illnesses when they occur because of duties performed on the job or while at work. Examples of injuries that may be covered by workers' comp include injuries caused by lifting heavy equipment, slipping on a wet or oily surface, or sustaining injury due to fires or explosions.
- Most state workers' compensation insurance programs do not provide coverage for injuries that occur while an employee is not acting within the scope of employment - such as water skiing on your day off.

- Premiums are usually based on the physician's specialty and geographic location but not on claims experience. This means that even if a physician has never been sued, he or she can end up paying extremely high premiums.
- The premiums can become high because of factors such as amount of coverage needed, claims severity, claims frequency, location of practice and laws in the area.
